Engineering & Environmental Services

Singapore's engineering and environment services industry has proven to be so robust that the country is now headquarters to the significant operations of 9 of the top 10 global process control and instrumentation companies. The country also hosts one of the world's largest membrane-based seawater desalination plants and has 15% of the world's publicly listed water companies listed on its stock exchange.

Driven by the lure of a solid infrastructure and extensive global connectivity, more than half of the world's top 40 engineering design firms have established headquarters, manufacturing and R&D operations here. This trend has also transcended down to many of Asia's infrastructural and industrial projects, who have anchored their engineering solutions here.

With this strong trend, Singapore is set on becoming a Global Hydrohub, accounting for 3-5% of the global water industry by 2015. We are also striving to be the leading provider and sophisticated user of Alternative Energy products and services.

To aid and support Environmental Technology companies from their innovation to test-bedding and commercialisation of technologies, the Institute of Environmental Sciences & Engineering (IESE) has been privatised to develop and commercialise technologies in the areas of membranes, clean energy and environmental biotechnology.

The Environment and Water Industry Development Council (EWI) has also been specially set up to front the growth of the environment and water industry in Singapore. This follows a recent announcement by the Research, Innovation and Enterprise Council (RIEC) in July 2006 to provide $330 million in funding for R&D over the next five years in order to boost the development of the local environment and water industry.

In partnership with EDB, IE Singapore, PUB, the Agency for Science, Technology & Research (A*STAR), National Environment Agency (NEA), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and NUS, EWI is aiming to encourage more companies and research institutes to develop avant garde water technology and to further export Singapore's capabilities to growing markets in the world.

With such task drivers, Singapore looks set to becoming the leading R&D base and water solutions provider with growing value-added (VA) contribution from the water sector from $0.5 billion (0.3% of GDP) in 2003 to $1.7 billion (0.6% of GDP) by 2015.
